Unit I

Introduction to Pharmacognosy

  • Definition of the term, its history, and scope, as well as development of the field of Pharmacognosy
  • sources of drugs such as animals, plants, Marine and Tissue Culture
  • Organized substances, unorganized substances (dried latex dried extracts, dried juices gums, and mucilage Oleoresins as well as oleoresins).

The classification of the drug:

  • Alphabetical taxonomical, morphological, and pharmacological classifications and Sero taxonomical classification of substances

Control of quality for Drugs of Natural Origin:

  • Adulteration of substances of natural origin. Evaluation using physical, microscopic, and organoleptic chemicals, as well as chemical methods, and their properties. Quantitative microscopy on crude drugs such as lycopodium’s leaf constants, spore technique camera lucida, and diagrams of microscopic objects that scale in camera lucida.

Unit 2

Cultivation of, collection, processing, and storage of substances that are of natural origin:

  • cultivation and collection of drugs from natural sources. Factors that affect the cultivation and processing of plants used for medicinal purposes. Hormones in plants and their uses. Mutation, polyploidy, and hybridization of medicinal plants.
  • The conservation of the medicinal plant

Unit 3

The cultivation of plant tissue:

  • The historical growth of the field of plant tissue and types of cultures needs nutrition, growth, and maintenance. Plant tissue culture applications in the field of pharmacognosy. Edible vaccines

Unit 4

Pharmacognosy in different medical systems:

  • The role of Pharmacognosy within allopathy and traditional medical systems, namely, Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy, and Chinese methods of medicine.

Secondary metabolites in the introduction:

  • definition of properties, classification, and testing for the identification of Alkaloids, Glycosides Tannins, Volatile oils, and Resins.

Unit 5

The study of the biological basis of chemical nature and the uses of natural-based drugs with the following substances:
